What to do if there is a drain emergency at your house?
Let's see first, what do we consider as an 'emergency'. Is the sewer drain backing up? That's a plumbing emergency. Why do we define it as an emergency:
Firstly, there is a reason for the sewage backup, and while it won't get resolved, it would not go away. There is an exception for the sewer backup when the property has a backwater valve installed on its lateral pipe; during the heavy storms and municipal main sewer and storm are overflowing, it was causing the backflow valve to shut. And this means the sewage from the main municipal line would not flow to your house. However, all the wastewaters from your property would not be able to leave your sewer line and stay there till the other side's water level goes down, allowing the port to open.
Secondly, water damage from the backup may result in expensive repair in your basement. The longer the water stays in the basement, the aftermath of the sewage flooding is more serious.
Thirdly, when the drain is backing up, it returns wastewaters that are contaminated with sewage. It poses health risks for your family.
